Why fewer, better applications win
Mass applying feels productive. For experienced candidates it usually backfires. Here's what works instead.
Auto-apply tools promise hundreds of applications a week. For entry-level roles that can help. For experienced engineers, product managers, marketers and data scientists, it usually hurts: the same small group of hiring managers sees generic applications, and recruiters increasingly spot AI-written spam.
A better system is narrow and deliberate. Pick the 10 to 20 roles a week where your experience is a genuine match. For each one, rewrite your opening paragraph and your top three resume bullets in the language of the posting. Lead with results that carry numbers.
Then add a human path. A short note to someone on the team, or a referral request, lifts your odds far more than another hundred cold applications. Track every application and follow up once, about a week later.
Plumrole is built around this approach: it ranks roles by fit, drafts tailored materials from your real experience, and leaves the final decision to you.
